The on-line open access journal PLoS ONE (claimed to be the largest in the world), seems to attract more and more social scientists, perhaps lured (like me) by its promise of fast turnaround and focus on solid research rather than “relevance.” However, until recently, “social science” was not an official subject category in PLoS ONE, making social science contributions difficult to find among the vast amounts of natural sciences and medicine articles published there each month. Now I noticed that they have seriously expanded their number of subject categories, which now include labels such as “social science”, “sociology”, “economics” and “social networks”, among many others. As a result, one can now for example directly find new sociology papers via a link in the weekly e-mail notifications. Although the system does not classify everything perfectly yet (e.g., also this is classified as sociology), this new policy should really help to make social science more visible in this exiting journal.
