A beautiful swarm

Posted on 09/03/2011

A fantastic video of an unusually large swarm of about 60,000 starlings, spotted this week over Utrecht, the Netherlands. Watching the swarm move around is almost hypnotizing . Notice the falcon flying around and through the swarm, changing the movement of the starlings. Another shorter video, but with music, is here.

The study of swarms is, by the way, a non-trivial and interesting endeavor, not unrelated to sociology, of course. In a way, it is the archetypal micro-macro transition. Wikipedia has an extensive article on the topic.

Great! Steven Strogatz would be thrilled 🙂
